Veterinary Immigration

Veterinary hospitals, clinics and specialist or emergency practices in the USA and Canada are open to the prospect of employing Veterinarians, Veterinary Nurses and Veterinary Technicians from other countries and regions, both between the USA and Canada, as well as from UK, Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and more.

The USA and Canada has a wide diversity of immigration processes ranging from skills assessments to work visa rules, regulations and sponsorship criteria. Vet & Pet Jobs is not a recruitment agency or immigration agency and we are not able to provide any specific advice in relation to the likelihood of a successful application or the steps to achieve acceptance in any country. The information provided is merely to assist potential veterinary immigrants with an initial reliable resource to start your journey.

USA

AVMA – American Veterinary Medical Association

  • To practice as a veterinarian in the United States, you must have either graduated from an AVMA Council on Education (COE)-accredited school  or successfully completed an educational equivalency certification program such as that administered by the AVMA’s Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates (ECFVG).

International Council for Veterinary Assessment

  • The North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE), administered by the ICVA since 2000, is a requirement for licensure to practice veterinary medicine in all licensing jurisdictions in the US and Canada.

U.S. Department of State

  • A citizen of a foreign country who seeks to enter the United States generally must first obtain a U.S. visa, which is placed in the traveler’s passport, a travel document issued by the traveler’s country of citizenship.

Canada

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada

  • You can immigrate to Canada as a Veterinarian. Veterinarians are in high demand in Canada and are on the Canadian NOC List code 3114. If you’re a Vet considering emigrating, Canada wants you. Qualified Veterinarians are eligible for full Permanent Residency in the Federal Skilled Worker Immigration Program on both a Federal and Provincial Nomination basis.

Canadian Veterinary Medical Association

  • The National Examining Board (NEB) is responsible for the administration, in Canada, of a 3-part veterinary licensing examination process. Completion of the exams is a requirement to be eligible to apply for license from any of the provincial veterinary licensing bodies. The NEB also participates with the Council on Education (COE) of the American Veterinary Medical Association in a program of accreditation of colleges of veterinary medicine.
